Collection of early nineteenth-century French documents, 1813-1841.

The collection is comprised chiefly of legal documents relating to the sale of residences in the Département de la Seine-et-Marne, France during the first half of the nineteenth century. Also included are an inventory with estimated values of furniture and various movable objects; four letters, dated September and October 1836, from a notary, A. Palyart, at Héricy, to one Monsieur Barre in Paris; various notes and documents from the 1830s; signature of three sheets from an accounts book.

Janet S. Byrne was a curator in the Department of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During her 47-year career at the Museum, she developed a picture file of bookbindings and their descriptions that was rediscovered in the fall of 1993 when the Department of Drawings and Prints was preparing a survey of British illustrated books.
